What Can Happen If Your Rotors & Calipers Are Bad?

A vehicle's brakes are paramount to safety; when they fail to function properly, they may put the driver and passengers at risk. Several problems can arise from not keeping brake components maintained.

Stopping Distance

  • Worn rotors and calipers increase your vehicle's stopping distance. As they become worse, your ability to stop quickly will diminish, increasing the chances of a collision.

Vibration

  • If your rotors become warped, you will feel vibration when you step on the brake pedal. This vibration may feel slight, or it may make controlling the car difficult. If you apply the brakes and your steering wheel shakes, your rotors have likely become damaged.

Noise

  • Bad brake rotors and calipers may create excessive noise when stopping. These noises can include squealing and grinding. The noise will worsen with the problem; if you ignore it, a wheel could lock up.

Risk of Fire

  • If your brake elements have become so worn that they no longer function correctly, the various elements may have begun to grind together and create friction and heat. If the problem worsens, it could cause a fire in the brake area.
