How to Repair Transmission Problems

Cars enable you in a short time period to get from one place to another without the use of public transportation. Once vehicle's transmission begins to experience problems, however, repair costs can be expensive if you bring it to a mechanic to fix. Before spending money on a costly repair, try to troubleshoot your transmission, or at the very least, have a used transmission installed at a repair shop cut costs.

  • Verify that your car has the correct amount of fluids. This process needs to take place at least once every six months. Checking the amount of brake, power steering and transmission fluids enables you to avoid transmission damage at a later date. Leaking usually causes low fluid levels.

  • Open the hood of your car to check possible leaks. Verify that the base of your filler tube, the area that lies in the middle of your engine and transmission, and your radiator do not contain any holes. Since a transmission does not have many places where a leak takes place, a leak often means your transmission contains damage.

  • Install a used transmission. This allows you to cut costs. Used transmissions, however, do not come with a warranty you may obtain from installing a new transmission.
