How to Remove the Spot a Magnet Left on a Car

Magnets do a great job of sticking to metal, but when applied to the surface of a car, they can scratch the paint. That's because the magnet picks up microscopic metal filings and, when the magnet is on the car, presses the metal against the paint. More likely, though, dirt and grime on the car gets pulled across the paint while the magnet is being removed, since most magnets aren't lifted straight up from the car.

Things You'll Need

  • Bucket
  • Car cleaning soap
  • Microfiber towels
  • Chamois
  • Hose
  • Microfiber mitt
  • Automotive detailing spray
  • Automotive detailing cleaner/polish
  • Automotive detailing wax
  • Foam applicator pads
  • Park the car in a shaded area. Wash the car using the car wash soap, the bucket, the hose, and the microfiber mitt. Make sure to wash the car from the top down so any dirt from the bottom of the car doesn't scratch the paint on the top of the car. Dry the car with the chamois.

  • Apply the cleaner/polish to the foam applicator pad. Rub the polish on the scratched surface in a circular motion to clean up the finish. Then buff off the polish using a microfiber towel.

  • Apply the wax to a fresh applicator pad, then apply the wax to the surface in a circular motion. Allow the wax to haze over on the surface, then wipe it off using a circular motion and a microfiber towel.

  • Spray the surface with the automotive detailing spray, then wipe it clean using a fresh microfiber towel in a circular motion. Look down the side of the surface and look for scratches. If necessary, repeat Steps 2 through 4 to clear up any remaining scratches.
