The Dodge Durango, which bridges the mid-size and large SUV range, has been a popular sport utility vehicle since 1998. While some changes have been made to the Durango's load capacity and features, the steering system has remained relatively unchanged across the years and maintaining fluid levels is fairly simple. Drivers who use their Durango heavily, though, will need to perform fluid maintenance at very regular intervals.
Perform maintenance on your power steering fluid once a month if you put regular to heavy use on your Durango. The power steering fluid levels should be checked along with other fluid levels such as the coolant and brake and transmission fluids.
Park your vehicle on a level surface and turn off the engine before checking fluid levels. If the engine is warm, allow it to cool before performing vehicle maintenance.
Locate the power steering fluid reservoir in the labeled engine department. Remove the cap to the reservoir and check that the fluid is above the low level mark.
Add fluid as necessary, making sure not to fill fluid above the maximum fluid level. If you are having to add fluid often, check for hidden leaks in the hoses or connectors that have come loose.
Check for breaks or cracks in the reservoir itself and other components of the power steering system whenever you check fluid levels. If you notice any worn parts, replace them immediately to avoid damage to your vehicle caused by hot fluid leaks.
