What Is the Oil Capacity for an '02 GMC Duramax?

The 2002 Duramax LB7 engine, like that found in GMC's Sierra 2500 HD pickup, was a 300-horsepower, 6.6-liter V-8 diesel with a beefy 520 foot-pounds of torque at 1,800 rpm. Mated to a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission, the Duramax engine was also an optional powerplant in the GMC Sierra 3500 and Topkick models. The crankcase in this workhorse engine holds 10 quarts of oil, including the oil filter.

Other Duramax Information

  • Produced from 2001 to 2004, the Duramax LB7 engine had a problem early on with injector failures. Once that was resolved, it became a popular engine choice due to its lack of emission equipment that sucks the fuel economy out of other engines. The Duramax LB7 was named one of the top 10 best engines in 2002 by Ward's Auto.
