How to Reset the Oil Life on My 2006 Chevy Silverado

The 2006 line of Chevrolet Silverado trucks came in three payload capacities --1500, 2500 and 3500 -- with plenty of gasoline engines to choose from, ranging from the base 195-horsepower, 4.3-liter V-6 in the 1500 model to the 330-horsepower, 8.1-liter engine in the 3500 model. All gasoline-powered 2006 Silverados featured an Engine Oil Life System that alerts you when an oil change is due. Resetting the Engine Oil Life System on your 2006 Silverado is a simple task that requires no special tools.

Resetting the Engine Oil Life System

  • After changing the oil, reset the Engine Oil Life System by turning the ignition key to the "Run" position without starting the engine, then pressing and releasing the accelerator pedal three times within five seconds. After you press and release the accelerator pedal the third time, the "Oil Life Reset" message flashes for about 10 seconds to notify you that the system is resetting. Turn the ignition to the "Lock" position, then start the Silverado's engine to verify that the "Change Engine Oil" message does not come back.
