How to Replace the Fuel Filter in a 2006 Ford Ranger

The fuel filter's job is to filter the gasoline, so that the engine can be kept free of sediments and impurities that might be present in fuels. The fuel leaves the gas tank and passes through the fuel filter before it is directed to the engine. A clogged fuel filter can keep the engine from cranking and running. You can replace the fuel filter on the 2006 Ford Ranger yourself in just a matter of minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Ratchet
  • Socket set
  • Fuel line disconnect tool
  • Small bucket
  • New fuel filter
  • Unscrew the gas cap from the gas tank to relieve the pressure from the fuel filter.

  • Locate the fuel filter on the 2006 Ford Ranger on the inside of the frame rail that runs under the driver's side of the truck, between the cab and the fuel tank.

  • Remove the fuel lines with the fuel line disconnect tool for a 2006 Ford Ranger. You can purchase this tool at most auto parts stores. The tool slides inside the fuel lines and unlocks them from the filter ports. Push the end of the tool inside the opening of the fuel lines. While pushing the disconnect tool inward, gently pull out on the fuel lines. The disconnect tool will release the clips that are holding the fuel lines attached to the fuel filter. This will allow you to remove the fuel lines. Let the excess fuel flow into a small plastic bucket.

  • Remove the bracket from around the fuel lines with a ratchet and a 7/16-inch socket.

  • Pull the fuel filter out and insert the new fuel filter inside the bracket, then tighten the bracket back over the new fuel filter.

  • Push the fuel lines over the fuel ports on both sides of the fuel filter until you feel the lines lock onto the fuel line ports. Then gently pull back on the fuel lines to make sure that they are secured to the fuel line port on the fuel filter.

  • Screw the fuel cap back on and turn the key on and off three times. This will prime the fuel filter with fuel.

  • Crank the engine and inspect the new fuel filter and fuel lines for leaks. Turn the engine off.
