It’s no secret that a programmer or tuner or re-flasher can help unlock some extra power residing under your hood. But also having control of things like lockers and lights, disconnecting sway bars, as well as engine-monitoring gauges, mapping performance tests, onboard DTC reader, and maintenance manager, all with a built-in inclinometer? Only the touch screen Trail Dash from Superchips offers all that. Unfortunately, it’s only meant for Jeeps, as much as we’d like a unit like this on some of our other later-model 4x4s.
The Trail Dash can do everything a standard onboard tuning unit can do, and a whole lot more. There is even engine idle and timing control available, as well as the ability to design your own custom gauge readouts using the expandability of the EAS (Edge Accessory System) plug-ins.
If you have a Jeep, this is the tuner to have. Now, all Superchips needs to do is make this for the Raptor and some other trucks.
The Trail Dash is made for 1998 to 2010 Jeep vehicles; Grand Cherokees, Wranglers, and the last Cherokees. There are five program level settings available (six including stock), depending on the year and model of the Jeep; two performance settings, one tow setting, one fuel-economy setting, and also a crawl setting. There are also custom options like speed-limiting adjustments, a maintenance manager, and a mileage coach.
You can select from a number of PIDs. Once you choose a PID, you can change the gauge color, look at readout information, and turn on alarms to indicate selected levels.
The main screen shows the power level the vehicle is in, three main readout gauges (PIDs), and one readout in each lower corner. You can select from these PIDS: Battery voltage Battery temperature Corrected speed Engine coolant temperature Intake air temperature Engine RPM Fuel level Gear ratio Pedal position (APP) Run time Trip odometer Trans temp
Superchips' Trail Dash is expandable via the EAS (Edge Accessory System) ports. With The EAS Power Switch, you can control electric lockers, turn on auxiliary lights, engage the onboard flame throwers, or whatever you choose to wire up to it. The whole point is the EAS system is expandable to allow you to control a number of accessories via the dash-mounted screen. There is also a video RCA port for a back-up camera.
The Pitch and Roll screen shows the inclinometer and 10 engine parameter readouts. While it is the most amount of information at once, we found this is a screen more friendly to trail riding and the main screen with three big readouts is much easier to use when driving on streets or at high speeds in the dirt.
