How to Transfer Gas From Tank to Tank

Running out of gas can leave you stranded and embarrassed; especially if you aren't near a gas station. If this happens to you, ask someone to help. You can easily transfer gas between two gas tanks with a siphon pump.

Things You'll Need

  • Siphon hose with pump
  • Purchase a siphon hose with a pump. Siphons with hand pumps are inexpensive, however; siphons with mechanical pumps are available at a higher price. Most auto parts stores carry siphon pumps.

  • Park the vehicles side-by-side with the gas caps directly across from one another. The vehicles need to be no further than a few feet apart, unless your siphon has a long hose.

  • Insert each end of the siphon hose into the vehicle's gas caps. Pump the hand pump a few times or use the mechanical pump to start siphoning the gas.

  • Remove the hose from the donor vehicle when you are finished. Hold the hose opening up to allow the excess gas in the hose to drain into the other gas tank.
