Dirt racing has its advantages, but it's also definitely hard on equipment. For years, racers have fabricated shaker screens from wire mesh framed by either steel or aluminum to protect the radiator from dirt clods and debris kicked up from the track.
But we ran across the lightweight replacement for the traditional shaker screen while working on a story with Modified racer Kyle Strickler. Outerwears has long been known for its shock covers, but the company now also has a lightweight radiator protector called a "Speed Screen."
Although it may not look like it, the Speed Screen allows air to pass through it easily to provide plenty of flow to the radiator but traps much smaller dirt and mud particles than any wire mesh shaker screen. So not only are the radiator's easily bent cooling fins protected from damage, the screen also keeps the radiator from clogging with dirt. The Speed Screen weighs practically nothing and removes quickly and easily via velcro so that it can be washed. Outerwears offers several models in different sizes and shapes to fit different styles of race cars.
