GMS Sure Start Smart Battery System - One More Chance

Every hot rod has a battery and with few exceptions these aren’t our daily drivers. Because of this type of use, or lack thereof, there’s always the possibility of having “dead” battery problems. There are preventative measures that all of us are aware of and employ. In order to dodge the occasional dead battery we install kill switches, disconnect or remove a battery from the car, or even the tried-and-true method of one form or another of battery minder.

All of these options work to one degree or another so while we are thinking about saving our hot rod maybe now is also a good time to give a “little love” to our daily driver. All of the cars in our lives have batteries and as such they can all fall prey to the same battery woes that lead to battery failure. According to AAA there are 3,000 dead battery service calls per month! So, is there another method of protecting yourself, and to a certain degree your battery, from coming up short when you least need it?

The Sure Start by Granatelli Motor Sports (there’s a name steeped in automotive tradition) is called the Smart Battery System. It functions by continuously monitoring your battery’s power … “and when it detects your battery power falling below the level required to start your vehicle it automatically isolates the battery from the electrical system.” What does this do? It makes sure that the battery is left with enough power to start your car when you need it. Sounds simple, and it is. Should this occur, you have now been given your first warning to check and see what caused the Sure Start to activate. Do you truly have a battery going bad? Did you accidentally leave your headlights on? You now have an option to solve a problem before it becomes a real problem.

It can be installed with simple hand tools (and power drill if you need to drill mounting holes). The entire install should take less than an hour and if you are comfortable under the hood probably less than 30 minutes. A simple press of the reset button or remote re-engages the battery so that the engine can be started.
