Have you ever wished you didn’t have to muscle your truck around just to get it in a parking spot? Well, it’s nothing now to adapt power steering (PS) to any vehicle but usually the hard part is searching through junkyards for used and, most of the time, sub-par parts. When you finally find the parts, it is anyone’s guess on weather they will fit or even work for that matter. This is why CPP has done their homework and came up with several power steering packages to fit our classic trucks. For this tech story we are going to show you an easy way to adapt power steering to your ’63-66 Chevy pickup/Suburban.
The CPP kit 6366PSK comes with a PS gearbox, pitman arm, PS pump, brackets, hoses, bolts, adapter plates, and steering shaft with rag joint. The only thing that needs to be added is a U-joint to fit your steering column, but not to worry CPP has those to. As you might have already figured out, we are installing the CPP kit on a ’65 Chevy Suburban that was featured in our August 2011 issue of CLASSIC TRUCKS. During the photo shoot with Chris Markley’s Suburban, I watched him struggle to turn the truck around like it was some sort of 10-ton tank. Well, it’s not quite that heavy but one thing definitely does not help the steering, and that’s the wheels. Chris purchased the massive 22” Billet Specialties Wheels with the thought of one day adapting a PS system. Being that Chris is a general contractor by trade he really didn’t know which parts were needed to complete the install but a quick call to CPP put his mind at ease. If I were to grade this install on a scale of 1–5, I think it would be a 2.5 because of the minimal tools that were needed and it was not that hard to figure out what went where. CT
