Auto Insurance Claims: Disclosure of policy liability limits, liability limits, law suit

Question
I was recently involved in a rear-end collision where I was deemed at fault.  The other party has hired an attorney and the attorney has requested disclosure of policy liability limits.  Should I as the insured consent to disclosure of this information?  I am a new driver and clueless as to how to proceed.

Answer
Hi Orlando,

The reason the attorney is seeking this information is to determine if there is enough coverage to cover what he anticipates is the value of his clients claim.

Depending on your state law, this information may be required to be disclosed or may not be disclosable at all or it may be completely up to you.

Your insurance company should be providing you guidance on this issue. You should ask them since they are the ones that will be defending you in the event of a law suit. If necessary ask to speak to their in house counsel.

I hope this helps
