Auto Insurance Claims: follow up, auto policies, renewal time

Question
Thank you for responding to my question asked on 5/9/07.  I still have more questions if you don't mind.
1. Even though the guy said we could work it out with out filing a claim, since he filed a police report, are you telling me that my insurance will automatically be notified and my insurance will go up?  My insurance renews in July and I still haven't called them.  I believe they will not pay it anyway (daughter not on policy),so I didn't want to "alert" them.  But are you telling me that they've already been notified?  I haven't heard from them.
2.The guy got back to Canada and is sending me the bill.  He is asking $1000. I don't want to start paying out of pocket, if I should just go ahead and try to file a claim.  I'm still confused.  Bottom line, is, if I know my insurance won't go up or I won't get dropped, my daughter said she will pay for the damage, since she caused the accident.  I just don't want to alert my insurance company.  I've never been in an accident and never want this on my record.  But if they're going to raise it anyway, should I just go ahead and try to file a claim and see what happens?
3.  My daughter has not lived with me in over a year. She is 19 yrs old.  She "stops in" to collect old mail, tell me how she is doing and whatever.  I have recently found out that she uses my address when applying for credit, because she is a "nomad".  She lives with friends and her boyfriend sometimes.  She has no utility bills or rent in her name and her license still has my address.  Should I call my insurance company and just tell them the whole situation?  Are they waiting to suprise me in July at renewal time? So, confused still!

Answer
Hi Ann,

1) your insurance company has not been "Notified". However, generally in the course of evaluating the renewal of auto policies, the insurance company will run motor vehicle reports on everyone listed on the policy. Although you were not in the car, it may show up on your motor vehicle report since it was your car. But it is also possible that it wont show up. Each state is different in how they handle this.

2)I can not tell you if you should pay it or file a claim.  That is up to you. But, if you decide to have your daughter pay it she should get a written ageement as to how much is to be paid and how.

3)The insurance company will not believe that she does not live with you since all of her identification has your address and she has nothing to prove that she lives somewhere else.

I'm sorry your confused. This is a tough situation.  There are no easy answers.

I hope this helps
