Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: a/c compressor, chevy s10, jumper wire

Question
Thanks I'll have that looked into and repaired. Now about the heat. This morning it was in the low 40's coming to work. I turned on the heat when I came to work and after a 20 min. ride to work there was no real heat. The air was a little warmer than the outside air  but not hot  at all. The water temp on the gauge showed at about 200 degrees or a bit lower. There was a slight change in temp. by the time I got to work  but it was hardly noticable. When I tried it yesterday after i got home it was much hotter. Any suggestions on what this might be or what I need to check?  THANKS  -------------------------

Autohelp I hooked up the jumper wire as you suggested and the compressor came on! The pinging that I am hearing did not change at all when the compressor came on. Upon further listening I don't think it is coming from the compressor but from somewhere from below it.There was no real change in the engines noises when the compressor came on. Also even though it was a rather warm day I also turned the heat on after driving home from work and it seemed to be putting out pretty good heat. I'll check that again inthe morning when it's cool. So if the compressor is coming on with the jumper wire what does this mean and whats my next step.. Thanks for all your help!-------------------------

Question -
On my Chevy S10 during the summer the a/c stoped blowing cold air, after about a month of slowly getting warmer. The fan portion was still working. Since I live in the mtns. of N.C. I don't have to use the a/c very often ,so I put off fixing the problem. About a month later we had a cool rain and I turned  the defrost on the heated air setting to clear the windsheild and there seemed to be no hot air . I then moved the setting to the floor heat and there was no heat there. Now there is no heat or a/c . The fan blower still works fine for the floor, vents, and defrost. I have had no work done to the truck other than a tune up last summer. The reason I suspected the compressor is that I hear a slight ping-ping as the engine is running  that seems to be coming from the compressor. -------------------------

Question -
My 1999 Chevy S10 truck has lost it's ability to cool and heat. Since it has lost both functions I am assuming it is the compressor. Is there a way for me to test or tell if it is the compessor for sure before I go and spend all that money, or may it just be the feon?  Thanks!
Answer -
Your A/C compressor has NOTHING to do with the HEAT portion of your system.

Write me a LONG LENGTHY NOVEL on what is EXACTLY your problem and what RECENT and PAST repairs of ANYKIND that have been done to the vehicle.

Answer -
Let's deal with the A/C system FIRST.

With the engine running, Set your A/C for maximum cool, and on high speed blower.

1. Locate the 2 wire electrical LOW PRESSURE CYCLYING
SWITCH that is attached to the RECEIVER/DRIER
(accumulator). The receiver/drier is located near the
firewall in the engine compartment on the passengers
side. It looks like an aluminum thermos bottle.

2. Using a 10 amp FUSED jumper wire, Disconnect the 2 wire
electrical connector from the switch as said in step # 1.

3. Using the jumper wire in step # 2 connect both terminals
together within the electrical connector that you
  removed from the switch.

4. Does the A/C compressor come ON and does the noise at
  the compressor cease ?.

This NOISE that you hear coming from the compressor is it ONLY evident when the compressor is NOT running ?.

Let me know.

You most likely have a refrigerant (freon) leak in the A/C system Once the leak is fixed and additional refrigerant (freon) is installed your compressor will be back to normal operation.

Answer
You have SEVERAL possibilities:

1. Low engine coolant in the radiator and the OVERFLOW PLASTIC jug for the engine coolant is most likely EMPTY.

2. A faulty partially opened thermostat.

Otherwise I do not get your original question and I can't remember what vehicle you have.
