Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: 98 Cherokee air conditioner, jeep cherokee sport, cherokee air

Question
My husband owns a 1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport and things are beginning to go bad.  Most recently, there is a "grinding" noise from under the hood and it is very loud when the air conditioner or defrost is turned on.  He says it sounds like  the clutch on the air conditioner is bad.  The AC hasn't worked right for a while and a test last year showed that coolant leaked out of the hoses.  (never fixed that) He wants to bypass the AC somehow because we can't afford the 500-700 bucks to fix it.  Is it possible?  How would he do that?  He's handy and can fix stuff if someone tells him exactly how or he sees a diagram or something.

Answer
You should FIX the A/C system as the longer it remains inoperative the more expensive it will be to fix.

What STATE do you live in ?, As I am teaching my son proper professional automotive repair and we do some repairs here in New Mexico.

You could just simply unplug the wire connector at the A/C and leave it that way and the compressor will NOT ever come ON as long as it is unplugged.

If the noise is still evident with the compressor unplugged then you will have to buy one or more of these possible faulty parts.

1. A new front hub compressor bearing.

2. A new clutch and hub assembly.

I realize repair costs are very expensive but since I am retired and teaching my son on weekends and if you are close by, We would be more than happy to give you an estimate and much cheaper reapir cost to fix the A/C.

Let me know.

PLEASE keep your questions on the ALLEXPERTS BOARD because without it, Us volunteers would NOT be needed.

I do not have a staff of people helping me answer your questions, I do it all by my self, Therefore, Due to being retired and a computer on a dial-up connection that is so old it does not even have SPELL CHECKER, So please excuse the TYPO'S.

I do my best to respond to questions within 4 to 5 hours, But  due to the volume of questions I receive on a daily basis I answer them ASAP. If you require a faster response you can e-mail me directly at the below e-mail address as I check it more frequently.:

meperganfortis@msn.com

When you are asked to RATE THIS EXPERT the site only allows for about 10 (TEN) words. Therefore,  I never get to read your full response. You can e-mail me directly at the above said personal e-mail site. But make sure that you RATE ME before e-mailing me directly if you so desire to do so.

Sometimes when you have to replace a part, I will ask you  if I can have the old part, As I rebuild them and sell them for extra income. I will pay the shipping costs as long as it does not exceed $10.00.

There are also times that you have some written information that you just don't understand or need help with it, You can e-mail it to me at the above siad e-mail address or you can fax it to me, But contact me FIRST at the e-mail address and I will give you my fax #.

I am alway in need of Car, Truck and SUV service manuals as well as MOTORS MANUALS and if you would like to donate any that you have I will be more than happy to pay REASONABLE shipping to get them. I do not want any Chilton or Hayes manuals as I personally do not like them as the information is very mis-leading in my opinion.

Retired in New Mexico and teaching my son to learn the trade.
