Question -
MY 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee no longer holds coolant in the A/C. It has had a "slow leak" for a while. Now the coolant evaoporates as soon as it is installed. I can smell the attempts at leak sealant in the Jeep.

How much should repairs cost?
Answer -
Depends upon WHAT specific part is leaking. I am not trying to be a wise guy, But A/C fluid is called REFRIGERANT and or FREON.

Once you find out WHAT is leaking then I can assist you further.

Don't waste your money on LEAK SEALANT. I have YET to see it do what it claims to do.

In the past I have been able to charge the A/C system with Freon, and it would last a few weeks. I do measure the sytem pressure before and after each charging. Now the charge only lasts for hours; the pressure quickly drops to zero. In addition, I get a odor (freon??) coming from the vents in the Jeep. I have NOT seen any evidence of the red indicator when I have used leak sealants.

Thanks for your help.

Answer
OK, That's the information that I was hoping you would give me.

Jeep is famous for your year model and is well known for having a fault (leak) of the evaporator of which is a classic example as to why you smell an odor within the passengers compartment.

Jeep knows about this problem but has been very reluctant to do anything about it. I would check with your local jeep dealer to see if jeep has changed their policy as to the infamous leaking EVAPORATOR.

Replacing the EVAPORATOR is a very complex task as it requires partial and or total removal of the complete dash assembly within the passengers compartment in order to replace the EVAPORATOR.

Cost of replacement EVAPORATOR and labor and materials runs approx $800.00.

Now that you have gotten off the floor from SHOCK, Call your local jeep dealer and make an inquiry.
