Auto body repair & detailing: 91 pontiac FireBird, wheel alignment, pontiac firebird

Question
QUESTION: a month ago i lost control in my 91 fire bird and the right18" rim broke going over the curb and i pushed my subframe back how would i get that problem fixed. my buddy is a mechaic but we tried everything but replace the parts damaged were replace besides the subframe and plus my 91 is low . just any advice

ANSWER: Hi!....The best way to go about and solve this problem, is to take your vehicle to a qualified Alignment Shop, and have them perform a preliminary wheel alignment....After this has been completed, they should be able to provide you with a print-out as to what is out of specification....In a collision such as this, all wheel alignment factors are a possibility...Camber, Caster, Toe, SAI, and Setback, are the most common....As far as the Sub Frame goes, there is the possibility of it being bent, or also just slid back....To figure this out, a cross measurement will need to be taken on the Sub Frame itself....If all checks out on the measurement, you can also see if it has simply just slid on it's mounts....There will be a clear indication if this has occurred, as you will be able to see where the bolts were originally installed, as opposed as to where they are now....Replace all parts as necessary, if needed, and get the alignment re-done....If you have any questions as to definitions, or alignment procedure, please drop me another line....Thanks...Dave

QUESTION: thanks alot but ya my subframe smacked the curb on the passenger side not the middle .it bascially looks like if some one went over a curb and dented in where a arm was, replaced the a arm..... now it pulls but gonna have aligned.i was just wondering how much it should cost to replace the subframe and do they take out the motor cause if so i wanted to drop a bigger engine. i only hsve a 305 fuel injected need more power got flowmaster but need MSD but ya just love working on cars but learning slowly

Answer
Hi Again!....Generally, the engine does not need to be removed to replace a sub frame....Labor rates will vary from area to area, but on average, the time should be between 5 to 8 hours....Here, the mechanical labor rate is $115 Dollars an hour, so it would cost you between $575 and $920 Dollars to replace, plus the cost of the part....Thanks....Dave
