Auto body repair & detailing: headlights, headlight lens, lens clarity

Question
Someone wiped something onto my headlights that caused a white haze to form on them.  They are plastic headlights.  I tried cleaning them with soap and water and Windex.  When the headlights are wet they look better, but when they dry the streaky white haze comes back.  It is like the plastic is etched.  Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Answer
Hi Julie,

Some chemicals will cause clear plastic to discolor or haze. You can try to use a mild rubbing compound on them and see if that works or 3M has a new product called Headlight Lens Repair Kit. It looks like it's designed for the D.I.Y. in mind. Basically, all you need is a household drill either corded or cordless should work just fine. Here is a link to a place that sells the kit online: http://www.repaintsupply.com/pd-3m-39008-headlight-lens-restoration-system.cfm They also offer a how to video for first time users. Good luck with it!
