Auto body repair & detailing: color blending metallics, blending clear, blendease

Question
I had to make a repair on a recent acrylic enamel paint job(2 months old) I did on my Mustang The color is PPG metallic blue and I am having a hard time color blending the repair to the old paint as the metallic is having a "Halo" effect around the repair. someone on this website recommended to someone else in another blog entry to use "blending clear" What is Blending clear and where can I purchase it? also what other items would I need to make the color blend if any? Thanks Gene

Answer
Hi Gene,

Blending clear is for use with basecoat/clearcoat paint finishes. unfortunately it won't work for Acrylic Enamel. With Acrylic Enamel you can use a product made by PPG called Blendease. Basically what you want to do before you apply your enamel paint is spray about 2 coats of Blendease over and beyond the area to be repainted. (This will only work if the Acrylic Enamel was sprayed with an activator in the paint originally if not it will wrinkle the original finish). After you have applied the Blendease immediately spray your color. The Blendease should stay soft enough for the enamel to melt into it. Thus eliminating the "halo" effect.

You should be able to buy it at any PPG automotive paint distributor. Here is a link that should help with locating a distributor: http://corporateportal.ppg.com/NA/Refinish/PPGRefinish/9-0-Locator/

I hope this helps.
