Auto body repair & detailing: rubber bumper cover repair - faded black paint, adhesion problems, black paint

Question
QUESTION: I have a 98 Honda Civic with a dent in the rubber bumper cover. It must have been backed into something square because it left an impression about 1/8" deep and 3" long. Is there any filler that can be used to repair it, or is the best way to heat it and press it out?

ANSWER: Hi Craig,

Definitely, Heat and press is going to be the very best way to proceed. Unless the paint is already broken you may be able to avoid painting if you can heat and push it back out. I always try and avoid fillers on plastics if at all possible. Avoiding plastic fillers helps eliminate adhesion problems.

QUESTION: I've filled some dents on the body and repainted with standard Honda Black but when I buff it out the repainted spot is much blacker - the rest of the panel is faded, somewhat milky in comparison. Where I remove the tape strip is also blacker than the panel. Is there something to add to the paing to "fade" it a little for a better match?
Thanks for the reply on the bumper.

Answer
Hi Craig,

Quite honestly you may have used the wrong color black to paint it. Honda offered two black solids for that year model. You can look at the PPG book at this link: http://www.tcpglobal.com/autocolorlibrary/cgi-bin/search/search.pl

You'll have to look at page 1 and page 3 to see both blacks. On page one the black you'll be looking for is on the bottom of the page 2nd one from the right. On the third page the black you're looking for is on the far right second one from the bottom.

Other than that there's not much that you can do that will really help.
