Auto body repair & detailing: 92 VW Jetta frozen door, power door locks, vw jetta

Question
Hello, I have a 92 Jetta with a frozen door in the left rear. It has power door locks and the power door locks quit working, what could be wrong with them? The pump works fine. The left rear door never worked and the power door locks quit working a few weeks after I bought it. Were do I start to diagnose the problem?
Regards, Ted

Answer
The problem with the door has to do with the latch, not the power locks. The latch is probably corroded. The lock part of the latch is stuck. A possible easy fix which works sometimes is to manually lock the door. Take your fist and gently pound the area of the handle. Unlock the door, try the handle. What happens is someone tried to open the door while in lock position, the lock release spring is not strong enough to pull it back because of the rust, so now it is jammed. By pounding lightly while in lock position, you might jar it loose. If that does not work, you will have to pull the trim panel and release it that way. It is also possible that a linkage rod fell off but then you be able to open from either inside or outside handle.
