Auto Parts: engines 1995 firebird, fuel injection equipment, better mileage

Question
I have a 1995 firebird with 3.4l.  I'd like to put a 350 in it but I'm not sure what to look for. Will all 350s fit? What is the differnces between a 350, 5.7, lt1 and ls1?

Answer
You could put any LT1 or earlier small block in this car without a lot of trouble if you aren't planning on using any of the original fuel injection equipment.  If you want the car to be a daily driver, then you should really stick with the LT1.  The LS engines are completely different from the earlier small blocks.  Aside from the bore and stroke they have nothing in common with the earlier small blocks.  But you could put one in your car, they used them from 1998 to 2002.  You would need the mounts and harness from a later car, as well as a different computer.  There are a few guys out there selling parts to make these changes easier.  I have to warn you, though, it will not be cheap.  If you have a nice car you might want to consider selling it and buying a V8 car.  Then you would have a lot less to do to get things going.  There's plenty of demand for the V6 cars because they get much better mileage.  You could get a Trans-Am, which is much cooler, anyway.  Depending on where you live, you also have to consider the emissions testing and regulation.  Many states just plain don't allow an engine change that causes a car to make more emissions.
