Auto Parts: RPM Gauge Not Functioning Properly, rear drum brakes, bosch platinum

Question
I have a 1993 Toyota Corolla GLi 1.6L 4A-FE engine (Philippine
release). The rpm gauge isn't functioning properly because even when Im at over
60kph, the rpm still doesn't reach the 1000 rpm. Is there someting
wrong with my gauge or some connections damaged? And also I have a fuel
mileage of not more than 8km/liter with aircon on highway driving. Can
you give me some advise to make my gas mileage more efficient? Thanks.

Answer
Hi Edward,

To me, 8km/liter sounds good. I'm a parts-guy, don't expect me to do the math. Saving gas is as simple as slowing down, waxing your car regularly, change the air and fuel filter regularly, change your plugs to the Bosch Platinum (NOT the plus2 or plus4 varieties), change the plug wires/cap/rotor if equipped, change oil regularly as well as the filter and don't forget the transmission. If you have an Auto trans, make sure the fluid and filter are replaced about every 30,000 miles. make sure your wheel bearings are operating smoothly, check the drag on the rear drum brakes, cut-down your use of A/C, and there is about a million other things I can suggest to help save fuel but not enough room or time to list them all.

I'd definitely say something is wrong with the gage. Replace it.

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
