Car Alarms: 1997 jeep cherokee, jeep cherokee, alarmtek

my son's jeep has a factory security system on it, and it's not working. The motor will start for a few seconds then the motor shuts down. He didn't receive a remote door opener and the keys he has are only regular keys. The back hatch doesn't open and neither will one of the back doors. Its at a mechanic garage now and he said to order a remote, but he wasn't sure if it would help reset the security or not. The remote are 200.00 I was told so I don't want to spend that if it won't work. I really don't know what to do as this is the only vehicle he has.
