Car Alarms: Car Alarms Goes off for no reason, gm products, buick lesabre

Question
I have a '97 buick lesabre and have had a car starter installed and had some problems with the car not starting.  I was told by the installer that Buick's are know for this.  That the chip in the starter and the chip in the ignition key are conflicting with one another.  Was told to only start the car with the starter and it should be fine.  And it has....except now my car alarm goes off on a regular basis for no reason.  Unfortunately, for my neighbours, usually in the middle of the night.  Could there still be a conflict between the starter and the security system?  How to I turn off the security system?

Answer
Buick's are known for conflicts between remote starts and factory alarms?  This is just simply untrue.  If properly installed the alarm system and factory systems should work flawlessly together.  GM products with VATS are indeed known for having problems with the key cylinder not making good enough contact with the pellet resistor in the key.  If this is what the installer is talking about it can be remedied in a couple of ways.  The first would be to have the key cylinder replaced, this would retain the factory anti-theft system's integrity but would be the more expensive option.  The second option and is to permanently bypass the VATS system, this would indeed take away from the factory security but would increase the reliability of starting.  To bypass the VATS only requires about $3.00 worth of parts and a little know how, your installer should be well aware of how to do this.

As to the alarm going off in the middle of the night for no reason, I would tell you to have the system looked at.  An alarm that falses regularly does no good to anyone.  The purpose of the alarm is to bring attention to the vehicle when someone is messing with it.  If it goes off all of the time, the neighbors will just ignore it (not to mention being upset about the noise) which does no good if anyone is really trying to get into the car.

Hope this clears it up a bit for you.
