Car Alarms: 00 Pontiac Grand Prix Factory Security Not working, pontiac grand prix, key fobs

Question
I have a '00 Pontiac Grand Prix GT.  The factory security system quit working a couple of years ago.  The dealer said that I needed something like a new sending unit (the problem was not in the key fobs).  It was going to cost over $500.

Do you know if there is any way to service this sending box?  Any other options or do I need to go with an after market security system/keyless entry?

I really miss the keyless entry.

Thanks.

Answer
Rediculous! That's such total BS! I hate car salsemen. And the stupid 6 to 10 times markup they try to push on the consumer. What a scam!

Fact is, you can get a used one of they're "sending units" at a junk yard, but in my opinion don't bother with the GM "sending unit" as, 1. it's way to costly for what it does, and 2. to put remote keyless in your car, with trunk release capabilities as well, runs 60.00. You would get 2 4 button remotes, 1 relay to pop the trunk hatch, 300 foot range, and you can most likely do it yourself. If feeling more adventurous, you can easily add an alarm to it and remote start as well for 1/6th of what they want to charge you for a factory defect replacement part. No way!

Have a look at the ASTRA 50 or the Micro DLR 4HD at
www.KEYLESSCAR.com and choose one or the other. Can't beat the deal, and it will pobably last alot longer then the
car, or the amount of time you own it. Better for resale too.

Just so you know. to wire in an aftermarket keyless to this car is only 7 wires:

CONSTANT POWER
IGNITION SENSE (SWITCHED)
LOCK
UNLOCK
PARKING LIGHTS FOR CONFIRMATION
GROUND
AND 1 RELAY OUTPUT TO POP THE TRUNK.

If you want the horn to honk in confirmation, add 1 more wire from the keyless entry brain harness for that. Done.

Let me know, and I will ship one out to you, along with the wiring chart for the 00 Grand Prix, and will assist you online to install it on any given Saturday or Sunday.

That's my take on it.
Let me know if I can assist further.

Regards.
