Car Alarms: Viper Alarm no longer responding, valet mode, alarm receiver

Question
My 1997 4WD 4Runner came with a Viper alarm, but I do not know the exact model.  It uses the standard two button remote.  A few days ago the car completely stopped responding to the remote, even though the red LED on the remote lit every time one of the buttons was pressed.  Assuming it was the remote's battery, I replaced it but still had the same results; the LED on the remote lit but the car did not respond (doors did not lock or unlock, alarm would not engage).  Using the kill switch under the dash, I was able to engage and disengage the valet mode, which gave me some hope.  Next I decided to find out if the alarm still would activate if set off, so I disconnected the battery, and sure enough, the siren went blaring.  The problem was that with the remote not communicating properly, I had no way to stop the siren or disarm the alarm.  The kill switch under the dash did not do anything, so I was forced to cut the black wire leading to the siren in order to silence it.  Now that my alarm was armed, I could not start the engine, so the next thing I had to do was open the dash and pull the right wiring harness out of the alarm receiver.  The engine will now start since the alarm has been disengaged.  This is where I decided to quite playing with it before I broke something else.

My question is, if I reinsert the wiring harness into the receiver, will this reset the alarm and require it to be reprogrammed?  If so, is there a possibility that with reprogramming, the alarm and remote will work properly again?  I'm not against taking it to a professional, but the first appointment they have available is in two weeks.  If simply reprogramming could do the trick, I'd rather try that myself now before I pay someone to do exactly what I could have done for free.

Answer
Ok, try this. Plug it back in then
Put the key in the ignition, and turn forward
all the way just before cranking. Then within
5 seconds, press and hold in the valet/overide
button, found under the dash area,
until the installed LED (the blinking light)
in your dash area comes on solid.
(Your valet switch might be the toggle (on/off) type.
in this case, key on, flip switch in oposite direction,
key off.)

This should be valet. This overides
the starter kill relay in the alarm harness,
and returns the car back to disarmed mode.

The only thing that will work now on your system,
is the keyless entry if installed.

Just Repeat these steps to rearm your system.

That should do it.
If you want to remove it at this point,
take it to your neighborhood installer
for this, or buy the wiring chart for
the vehicle, and reverse engineer it wire
by wire, until it's safely removed.

Let me know what happens.
