Car Stereos: alpine ina-w 910, parametric equalizer, eq settings

Question
QUESTION: Hi This Alpine deck has a graphic Eq and a parametric equalizer built in.  Which is better to use in a toyota rav4, I have great speakers.  Also what is hpf and lpf?  and what does it mean by defeat?

ANSWER: Hi Gary,

You'll find that internally, the graphic eq and the parametric eq do the same thing.  It's just pretty pictures that achieve the same thing: let you specify the levels based on specific frequencies.

HPF means high-pass filter, and LPF means low-pass filter.  A high pass filter will attenuate (weaken) low frequency sounds.  You'd use an HPF on a tweeter where you don't want it receiving 20Hz tones, and you'd use an LPF on a subwoofer since you wouldn't want a sub wasting its time on super high frequency sounds.

I'm not sure what it means by 'defeat'.  I'd need more context than that.

QUESTION: Thanks for the help, but a hpf with either  a 60hz,80hz, or 100hz would each level not allow the frequency below it to pass?  If the 60hz is on 60 and below will not go to the tweeter? and so on for the 80 & 100?

As for the defeat button, in the alpine ina-w 910 manual page 54 it says

"Turning Defeat ON or OFF
Touch [] or [] of Defeat to set to ON or OFF."  Really?  I am not the crazy one but if you don't explain the reason for a defeat button why put it in? if they said switch turn on and off a light there would be a purpose, right

Answer
Hi Gary,

Your assumption about the HPF is correct; if you set it to 60Hz, it will stop anything below 60Hz from going out to whatever's hooked up to it.  This is a good idea on a tweeter, because a tweeter can't hit 60Hz.

I just downloaded and checked the manual to your headunit, and you're right: they did a very poor job of explaining the purpose of the defeat button.

From what I've been able to gather, the defeat function enables and disables the external audio processor.  When defeat is enabled, your highpass/lowpass filters, bass/treble, eq settings, etc, are all disabled.
