Car Stereos: 2005 Chevy Silverado 4 door cab, 4 ohms, chevy silverado

Question
The driver side front speaker and passenger side rear speaker does not work most of the time.   A couple of times the driver side front speaker and passenger side rear speaker would work in the afternoon and you would hear the door chime when opening the door.  But the next day the two speakers would not work and the door chime as well.  No it seems the two speakers have stopped working all together.  I have tried a new radio and still have the same result.  What would cause the front driver side speaker and rear passenger side speaker to not work?  Would there be a broken wire in the driver side door?

Answer
Hi Chris,

The chime goes through the stereo, which is why a break in the speaker wires would cause that issue.

If you have a factory stereo, then you likely have a short or a broken wire somewhere.  The best way to test is to remove the factory stereo, isolate the wires going to each speaker, and test their impedance with a multimeter.  If it's less than 4 ohms, you have a short.  If it's 4, then something is up with the speaker itself, and if it's more than 4, then you probably have a bad connection.  (AROUND 4 is acceptable too.. like.. 3.8-4.2ish).

Being that you've lost two speakers on the same side, perhaps there's a wire harness behind the dash that got pinched somewhere.

If you have an aftermarket stereo, you should have an aftermarket adapter that does your door chiming.  Check it.  It's probably your issue if that's the case.
