Car Stereos: Installed Pioneer head unit into 98 Honda Odyssey - no sound, internal amplifier, honda odyssey

Question
I hooked up a Pioneer DEH-1300MP into my 1998 Honda Odyssey.  The stereo lights up, seems to get radio stations, plays cd's, but there is no sound whatsoever.  In addition, the back of the unit gets extremely hot.

I used a Metra wiring harness designed for my car's model/make/year and connected all the like colors together, including the black ground wire.  There is one wire coming out of the Pioneer unit that does not match a wire on the harness.  It is a blue/white wire with a sticker on the end that says system remote control.  I have an extra wire coming from the harness that is blue and says power antenna.  My car does not have a power antenna.  Should I connect these 2 wires?  Is there something else that I am doing wrong?

Thanks,
Max

Answer
Hi Max,

There's nothing special to do with your particular vehicle.

Don't hook up that blue and white wire coming out of the deck; it's there for if you install an aftermarket amplifier.

Decks getting hot is pretty common, but I don't know how hot is normal.

You may just have a bad deck.  Before concluding that, though, make sure that a) the volume is up (I know it sounds stupid, but many decks when fresh installed have their volume at 0 out of the factory), b) if there is an option in the deck's settings to turn on/off the internal amplifier, that's enabled, and c) the speakers are hooked up in the harness correctly and cleanly -- if the deck detects a short anywhere, it will disable its internal amplifier to protect itself from damage.

If you continue to get no sound, and the deck continues to get really really hot, it might be time to replace it.
