Car Stereos: RX8 intermittant speaker problem, best guess, annoying problem

Question
Hi Scott. I am having a small but annoying problem with my 2005 RX8 BOSE pax side speaker.  When I have the volume above about 20, (fade & Bal are 0) I am intermittently loosing the sound from the footwell speaker only. (the tweeter is fine) I've tried to determine if its happening when the car is warmed up or cold but doesn't seem to make a difference.  When it drops out it can be for a few seconds or a few minutes.  However, when I turn the radio down to around 10, it comes back on and does not miss a beat!(although not imediatly)  I can also turn the ignition off then on again, and this works too.  I was starting to wonder if this was an overheating problem in the Amp or something?  Or is there a thermal cutout for each amp?  Pls help as its very hard trying to fault diagnose it. cheers

Answer
Andy,

My best guess would be a short in that speaker wire.  It has rubbed through the insulation somewhere, and is touching a piece of metal.  When it does, it cuts out.  You can turn it back on by turning it down, because there is less power going through and it is not enough to arc over to the metal and short.  You should start at the speaker and track the wire back toward the stereo.  You will find a tight spot, and that will be where the short is.  Hope this helps, Scott
