Car Stereos: autostart installation, 2003 F150, valet mode, orange wire

Question
QUESTION: Im trying to install a remote star system in my 2003 f150, my question is in regard to the bypass module, where do I connect the bypass module (model 795) to the remote start autostart AS 2775 module, I dont see any plug(s) for this on the module, thanks (I checked the autostart website, no luck there)

ANSWER: Hi Hector,

I'm not familiar with the model 795 bypass module.  Do you mean a model 791?

If you're using a universal bypass (one where you have to insert an ignition key) then you typically only need to connect three wires:  a constant power wire, a ground wire, and an activation wire.  The activation wire is typically connected to the "ground when running" output of the remote start system.  On the AS-2775, the GWR output is a blue wire with a black stripe.

On the 791 module, the red wire is for constant voltage, the orange wire is ground, and the blue wire is the activation input.  You'd connect the blue wire to the blue/black wire from the Autostart system. The red wire should be spliced into one of the red "battery" wires, and the orange wire should be spliced into the system's ground wire.   The other wires on the 791 aren't used for a transponder bypass.

If your bypass module isn't a 791, I'd need to know the manufacturer so I can try to find a wiring diagram.

Hope this helps!

QUESTION: I got the starter to work, however I went in to the programing mode told it to do the virtual tach system, it look like it went thru it, I turned the system off and now the system don't come on, the light on the antenna blinks continuously, I let me reset the system, put it on valet mode, take it out of valet mode and it still nothing from the unit, no lock, unlock no clicks at all, I'm assuming its on valet mode but cant get it out of it, again this is the autostart AS2775 model, thanks for any additional help ( I unplug it for about 1 hr plug it back and still doing the same)

ANSWER: Hector,

Even in Valet mode, the lock/unlock buttons should work from the transmitter.  It sounds like the unit receiving the signal from the transmitter at all (or isn't recognizing it).

Make sure that the antenna cable is securely connected, both to the remote start module and to the antenna itself.  If your remotes still aren't working, try re-programming the remote to the system, using the instructions on page 16 of your installation guide.  It's possible that the remotes were inadvertently deleted from the system memory.

Good luck!

QUESTION: Thanks, that did the job, however I have a new one, for the pats interface I'm using the 555f-w bypass module (changed from the 791, didn't want to lose a key), before the last problem it was working ok ( the bypass was working), now the truck don't start,  when I connect the blue/red stripe wire to the blue wire of the bypass the power goes to zero as soon as the two wires touch, (R/S still work as far as trying to start the truck, it starts with a key in the ignition),  I will explain, on the bypass I connect the red to a 12v source and the blue to the blue/red stripe on the R/S, but before I connect it I measure the current on the R/S and get about 8v with the neg prove on the blue/ red stripe wire I then do the connection blue bypass to blue/red stripe R/S and it goes to zero, when the R/S is starting the truck I don't get anything out of the blue/ red stripe wire as long as it is connected to the blue on the bypass, I guess the bypass is fry and its grounding itself? can the bypass be reset? thanks again for all your help, Hector

Answer
Hector,

The 555F is activated by a ground connection on the blue wire, so while the remote starter is working, you shouldn't get any voltage if you're testing the blue wire.  It should be connected to the blue/black GWR output on the remote start module; I assume that's what you meant, because your remote starter doesn't have a blue/red.  To test the connections with a meter, put the red probe on the red wire and the black probe on the blue wire (at the bypass).  You should have no (or low) voltage before remote starting, then it should jump to 12 volts or more when you activate the remote starter.  It should stay at 12 volts during the time the remote start is running.  (Basically you're testing the voltage on the red wire with reference to the blue wire).

If you don't get 12 volts during the remote start cycle, then switch the black probe to a chassis ground point, and leave the red probe on the red wire.  You should get 12 volts at all times.  If you don't, then there may be a problem with the constant voltage connection to the bypass module.  If you do get 12 volts at all times when testing the red wire against chassis ground, then temporarily connect the blue wire directly to ground and try remote starting.  If this works, then you may need to upgrade the remote start module's ground connection, or there may be a problem with the blue/black ground-while-running output.

If it still won't remote start with the 555f's blue wire grounded, then the problem is likely with the 555f module itself, or with the pellet position.  The 555f may be defective or may be programmed incorrectly, but I'd suspect that the position of the pellet needs to be adjusted.  From my experience with the 555f module, I've found it to be extremely finicky about the mounting of the pellet.  Try holding the pellet about 1" in front of the key switch, and activate the remote start.  If it starts successfully, then you have to start trying different mounting locations until you find one that works consistently.  It can be very difficult to find a pellet mounting location that still allows you to put the steering column shroud and key switch bezel back together.

Hope this helps!
