Car Stereos: Subwoofers, kicker l7, kenwood kac

Question
I want to buy an Kicker L7 in an angled truck box but I don't know wether to get a duel 2ohm or 4ohm? They are the exact same price so I really don't know what I want. I am going to buy a Kenwood KAC-9103D that amp seems to be the right price and a good amout of power. That is unless you tell me why i shoulden't. I've been serching trying to find the answer to my delima but I have wound up confuzed every time. I want my truck to hit kinda hard but not enought to mess up my amp. I know Kicker is good so i went with it and Kenwood. I have benn told that 4ohms does not hit as hard as 2ohms. And I dont really understand ohms so I need and expert opinion. and incase you are wondering I will be listening to most types of music. Anyway thanks for your opinion.

Answer
Hi Dylan,

As to which amp or sub you buy, that's entirely subjective, so Ill let you decide for yourself.  Go to local stereo shops and give the stuff you want to buy a listen.  Decide for yourself.  Everyone places different value in different attributes of the sound produced by different hardware, so me giving you an answer would be nothing more than an opinion.

That said, based on the amplifier and subwoofer you've chosen, I would suggest the dual 2ohm subwoofer because you can get more power out of it by putting the coils in parallel, thereby giving you 1ohm of impedance, which will yield the highest output that amp is capable of.

That said, the 4ohm coils in parallel would also be acceptable and would probably in the end yield just as much power as the 2ohm with a longer lifetime due to the higher impedance.

If you just want a clean good hit and aren't worried about squeezing every last droplet of power out of it, go with the 4ohm coils.

The impedance is a measurement of the resistance across the coil.  Generally, amplifiers that can handle the lower impedances can drive more power at the lower impedance, but create more heat and will likely last a shorter amount of time in the end as a result.

In the end, either is a fine choice.
