Car Stereos: mk3 golf right channel problem, active crossover, side speakers

Question
hi, i have a '98 mk3 golf 5 door, i recently installed a brand new headunit and it works fine, however, I have the aim of replacing the tweeters in the dash with 8 ohm tweeters and replacing the door speakers with 4 ohm jbl gt5-652's, when i bought the car it had no rear speakers, and it already had an aftermarket headunit, however it shorted out and died. before it shorted out the only sound that came out of the speakers, was out of the left hand side.  I have replaced the front speakers with the jbl's, however, even with these and the new headunit, the signal seems very weak at the right hand side speakers, whereas the left hand side works fine like before.  My question is do you know if the problem is the wiring on the right hand side speakers, if so, do you have any instructions on how to rewire that side of the car (and any tips on wiring the 8 ohm tweeters in the dash, the headunit can handle 4-8 ohm loads)

thanks for any answer

Answer
david,

If the car is setup equal and you put your head in the middle of the car, both sides should sound the same loudness.  If the right side is noticeably quieter, then I would recommend rewiring both sides of your door speakers.  Rewiring front speakers is not too difficult.  Disconnect current plugs and wires from speakers and pull out through door jams then under dash.  If they get taped into a wiring harness, don't worry, just clip them off by the tape.  Then, with new wire, run from your head unit through behind the dash over to the door jams, then run through jam into door and wire into speaker.  Make sure any moving or tight spots are check for wear points or crimping points.  Make sure both ends of wires are marked, so you hook the positive to positive on each end.  As for wiring in tweeters, there are a couple of concerns.  To wire in tweeters, a passive or active crossover needs to be used to control what signal is going to the tweeters.  If a full spectrum signal is sent to a tweeter, it will always sound statically like it is blaring.  You want only high frequency signals getting to your tweeters.  This can be controlled with a passive or active crossover.  Second, your 8 hom tweeters have more resistance than your 4 ohm JBLs, so the tweets are going to be about half as loud.  While matching up systems, the speakers should have the same resistance to insure each component is the same loudness.  Hope this helps, Scott
