Car Stereos: amp problem, olds alero, monsoon system

Question
QUESTION: Have a problem 02 olds alero factory radio hooking up amp to it put a converter to the rear speakers left side works right don't what do you think it wrong. and what i mean is when i hook up the rca to amp left side works right dont.

ANSWER: Hi Dave,

There are several things that could be causing your problem.

Is this a 2-channel amp wired in a "bridged" configuration?  If so, the amplifier may be working as designed.  Many 2-channel amps, when bridged, will use only the left channel input for a source signal.  Sometimes there will be a "stereo/mono" switch on the amp which will determine whether the amplifier uses both RCA inputs or only the left.

Try connecting the right channel RCA cable to the left channel input on the amp.  This will help you determine whether the problem's in the amp, or in the source wiring.  If you're getting sound when the right RCA is connected to the left input, then you know there's a signal present on the left and right side of the cable and the problem is in the amp.  If there's no sound, then you know that there's no signal on the right RCA cable and the trouble is in the cable or the line-out converter.

If your Alero is equipped with a Monsoon system, and you connected your line-out converter at the speaker wiring in the trunk, then you may have one side connected to the wrong wires.  Monsoon systems use separate wires for the bass and treble to the rear speakers.  If you're trying to use an amp for subs, and your converter's right channel is connected to treble wiring, then there won't be any bass output for the amp.

Good luck!

Brian

QUESTION: no is dose not have monsoon and it is not the amp it is the wire on the right side and i got single because the right side speaker works and i got the + and - right that is y i dont under stand that it dont work so what i had to do it y the left side to get both channel to work.

Answer
Okay, if I'm understanding you correctly, you had to put a Y-adapter on the left RCA cable and connect it to both inputs on the amp, to make your right side speaker output work.  Is that correct?

If so, it sounds as if you don't have any audio signal coming through the right channel of the RCA cable.  The next step is to figure out if the problem is the cable, or the line-out converter.

Go to the line-out converter, and switch the RCA plugs.  Plug the right RCA into the left output, and the left RCA into the right output.  See if the problem at the amp switches sides.

If the right RCA channel doesn't work no matter which jack on the converter it's plugged into, then you have a defective RCA cable.  Replace the cable.

If the RCA cable works when it's plugged into the left output of the converter, but not the right output, then there's either a problem with the converter itself, or a problem with the speaker wiring to which it's connected.
