QuestionQUESTION: I have a 99 BMW 740il. The check engine light came up. Had my local mechanix check the codes and it comes up something like running on lean mixture. When I drive the car, the engine shakes and car almost loses power and moves with continuous jerking motion. Also sometimes during driving, the engine blurts out a strange noise such as you would hear come from a vacuum cleaner. At idle, the car is fine but you hear a clicking noise which one can identify by placing ears on the body and is heard only inside. Wonder if these are all related problems. Thanks for any help you can provide in advance.
ANSWER: It sounds like you need a separator plate/EGR plate. While the car is running lift the hood and remove the oil cap,put it on and off if the engine makes a honking noise and the oil cap is difficult to remove then you need to replace the separator plate. the other noise i don't think is related to the your first problem. check that and get back with me . also when you shut the car off does it make a strange noise. QUESTION: Nathanm, on another thought, Yes I did have this problem before and replaced the valve at the back of the engine, so this is not the same problem and the noise is different from the noise this valve made back then. This noise is more a growl (not the engine growl typically BMW engines make) but like a draught passing through. Thanks again.
AnswerI will give this some thought. Try to find a pattern... when engine cold,when first driveing,after driveing for some time, after car sits for some time..... observe and try to get me more info. Thanks Nathan p.s. any check engine light on ????
