BMW Repair: Final Stage Unit/Resistor, torx screws, torx driver

Question
hi Evan, i have a 1999 318Ci, VIN: WBABL32040JP72233...my fans seem to be possessed, they sometimes decide to work and sometimes not!!! well its mostly NOT now...it drives me nuts as sometimes windows are really steamed in the winter and its freezing in the car, and the heaters just decide to stay turned off....i have done some research on the net and it seems like it maybe the Final Stage Unit thats faulty, i have taken off the glove compartment, but i cant seem to locate the FSU, can you give me any advice as to where to look for it for? or if you have any diagrams or pictures that would be great. thanks

Answer
Tejpal, remove the black plastic heater duct. The A/C stepper motor is close to the firewall. Push the little tap and pull the bottom portion of the motor. You can disconnect it if you like. Take your T-20 torx driver and remove the two torx screws that are in the black plastic piece that to the left of the stepper motor. Remove the steel rod that attaches to the stepper motor by pushing the rod out of the plastic clip. Now the Final Stage Resistor is located just past were the rod goes into the firewall. It is the heavy gauge wires that go into the final stage. Unclip the tab and pull out the final stage.
