BMW Repair: oil pan replacement, radiator fan, wont move

Question
hi there

Couple of weeks ago I hit a rock and to a big chunk out the oil pan on my 89 325i

I bought another oil pan from eBay and started taking everything out of the way to get the old oil pan out and at the same time the car was due for a new timing belt and water pump.

I got the saw bar out of the way but I am nit sure how to get the steering rack out because it is in the way the pan won’t move

Do I need to lift the engine and if I do where and what would be the proper procedure to do that

thank  you

hani

Answer
Hi Hani,
First remove the radiator fan, then the right and left engine support, then proceed to lift the front of the engine (but take care that the rear end does not go to far back and up and hit the firewall or something that can be damaged).
Mechanics usually secure the upper front end of the engine
to a cross bar mounted across the 2 front fenders (be careful not to damage the fender or anything else).
Now you can take out or at least move/hang the steering gear
so that you can replace the oil pan.
Have a nice weekend! Do not hesitate to ask for more instructions if you need it.
