Question
Hello.. I have a 1997 BMW 528i, and I went to start it it and it fired and then quit. It will crank but will not fire.  I have checked all fuses and all tested fine. Any info would be appreciated.

Answer
Alicia, We have to figure out what your car is missing. Time to check for fuel and spark. Pull an intake manifold vacuum hose (Brake booster hose works good) and spray a coupe of squirts of starting fluid. If it sputters and starts for a second then you are missing fuel in the engine. If that does nothing then return the manifold hose, and pull a spark plug with Ignition coil still attached place the plug on a good ground source and have some one crank the engine as you look for good spark. If you have fuel and spark then look at the Idle valve (aluminum T-shaped valve) just ontop of the throttle body. It has a three wire connector on it. Get a long extension and tap on the body of the idle valve. Then try to start it. If it starts then remove the valve and clean it or replace it, your choice. Should hear the door clicking if you twist it while in hand.
