BMW Repair: electical system error?, camshaft sensor, crimp connectors

Question
I own a 2001 321i. I have been having problems with the engine light always going on and off. Once the light comes on, usually when I drive through heavy traffic with lots of stops and starts, the car begins to shake. I have discovered that when I reach a red light, if I turn the car off and back on again, the light goes off and it runs fine again. I have had the car looked at, but they have told me nothing is wrong? I also can not use the air conditioning when it rains, since it states the temp outside is -40 whenever I hit a puddle of water in the road? Also being without a manual, no one can tell me how to reset the time. Did I just buy a lemon or can these things be fixed.

Answer
Corey,What is a 321? What man can make, man can fix. If your car is anything like a 325i or 330i you reset the time by twisting the button on the instrument cluster. You need to read out the faults in the DME (engine computer). Your symptoms sounds like a faulty camshaft sensor but you need to see if you have any faults. As for the temp reading in the cluster you need to replace the outside temperature sensor, inspect or repair the wiring properly (no crimp connectors) and inspect the black plastic bumper corner support for impact damage. I don't remember which side the outside temp sensor is on but it is a 2.5 inch black plastic probe that mounts in bumper support corner and faces the ground. Please fill out a follow up survey if this helps you. As it should.
