BMW Repair: Difficult Warm Up, coolant temperature sensor, kragen auto parts

Question
Hello Michael Sheld,
I have a 1984 318i e30 BMW. 149,000 miles.
Whenever I start the car, it starts, gas surges for the warm up,then instantly does not maintain idle and engine stalls.  In order to keep the engine idling, I have to keep my foot on the gas pedal for about 4 to 5 minutes until the car warms up, then I can let go of the gas.  And then the engine will idle and not stall.  I went to a kragen auto parts store, and the sales person suggested to me to put some gasoline additive to clean the carburator, then to install new point, plugs and rotor and cap.  It still stalls after initial start.  I would like to ask what else should I do?

Answer
You are on the wrong track.  I didn't think this engine had points either.
is it a European model car?
the USA model cars from Germany mainly had fuel injection.
you should check the coolant temperature sensor and  warm up regulator.  check the fuel pressure during warm up, if it's under it's minimum pressure spec the cold start valve (connected to the fuel line under the intake) is at fault.  it's possible you are using the wrong oil but that won't make the engine stall out.  look into the fuel system, i don't think this is ignition related.  quit taking advice from wannabes at kragen, even if you had a carburetor, fuel addative will not fix it, it's just expensive rubbing alcohol.
should it be carbureted, check the automatic choke and the idle mixture screws.
