GMC Repair: 02 Yukon Parking Brake, daytime running lights, brake shoe

Question
The parking brake/emergency brake does not work.  Really it works, just not well.  There is no resistance when depressing it.  I have no problem taking off when it is fully depressed.  However, the light does blink and there is a warning signal that chimes after a bit, so I don't run it for long.  And, as soon as I release the brake, the Daytime running lights come on.

Is there a way to tighten that up to where it will actually prevent the car from moving much with the brake.  Maybe I am weird, but I hate to feel like the weight of the car is resting on the transmission in park.  Any advice on making the adjustment would be appreciated.  Thanks

Answer
Hi
Your park brake shoe is mis adjusted.
It does need to be adjusted. The rear calipers must be removed and the rotors also. Then the park brake shoe should be measured and the park brake "surface" of the rotor measured and the shoe set to the measurment less .005". This is how the park brake is adjusted for your vehicle.
You MAY find that your park brake shoe has "eaten" to deep into the rotor to allow for proper adjustment, and park shoe AND rotors MAY need replaced.
It is a COMMON occurance on these vehicles.
The Park Pawl inside the transmission IS designed to support the weight of the vehicle.
The Daytime Running Lights(DRL) WILL NOT operate with the park brakes applied. That is the way they are designed.
I Hope all this helps.
As I always say, if in doubt, take your vehicle to a repair facility in your area your familiar with for another opinion.
Just advice from experience.
Good Luck
