Question - We actually tried this earlier today and determined that it was getting the fire but not the fuel ....What my question is (as well as hope do to finances) can it be possibly as simple as the fuel filter since I did let it run out of gas last week when we realized the gauge went out? The guage did not just stop one day, it worked intermentily for the week or two before it died.

Answer -
You probably got some contaminated fuel which caused the level sender for the guage to go out, and now your fuel pump is probably dead.

The easy way to check is to remove the air intake duct from the engine, and unplug the sensors in it, spray carb cleaner into the throttle body and see if the engine starts. If it does it will die very shortly after it starts and you can keep it running if you keep spraying carb cleaner into the throttle body. If this works then your fuel pump is not providing enough fuel pressure and needs to be replaced.

If you happen to have a fuel guage you can install it on the fuel rail and you should have no less than 66psi.

Answer
Possibly but not probably.

You should change the fuel filter when you change the pump so try it first antway if you want to. Also, contaminated fuel normally takes a little while to affect systems to shut the shut down point. If you do replaced the pump look inside the tank for water or trash.
