GMC Repair: 2003 GMC Envoy HVAC programming, automatic temperature controls, plastic vacuum

Question
Hi.

The system in the Envoy (lke other GM products) is automatically programmed to use outside air when in defrost mode. This is inconvenient in a humid environment when I need to run the AC to lower inside humidity and keep the windshield from fogging. Letting in humid air defeats the purpose. Same goes in Winter when I need to heat the windshield rapidly and don't want cold outside air coming in.

Is there any way to place the inside/outside air selector switch under full manual control? My dealer has no clue.

Thanks,

Ron

Answer
I'm not a bit surprised that the dealer or most reapir facilities has run acreoos this question. Fortunately for you you have found someone who has had this question asked several times.

YES, It CAN de done. However, I would nee to know if your vehicle has the MANUAL A/C-Heat control panel or the AUTOMATIC style control panel.

If it has the MANUAL control panel this is very easy to CLOSE off the OUTSIDE air and have the IN-CAR air provide the air source.

All you need is:

1. 6" piece of vacuum line (rubber) tubing.

2. 2 plastic vacuum T's.

3. A ONE-WAY vacuum valve.

I have used this setup numerous times in HIGH HUMIDITY regions and it works VERY WELL.

There is also another self contained heat strip that you can insert into the IN-CAR inlet housing tube that will HEAT the in-coming air as it enters into the air duct.

This heat source may NOT be needed in your particular case depending upon your geographical location.

So I can e-mail you a vacuum schematic as this website does NOT allow pictures to be displayed.

I need to know he following about your vehicle:

YEAR
MAKE
MODEL
MANUAL or AUTOMATIC temperature controls.

And MOST importantly, How mechanically skilled are you ?. I started to ask this question when I had someone who after sending schematics and numerous directives ONLY to discover his mechanical expertise was limited to emptying the ash tray.
