GMC Repair: engine, engine rebuilder, little of your time

Question
I was told by a cetified mechanic  that the engine block was cracked and a sniffer test confermed this. The substance was yellow in color when it should of been a different color. I need to know if a new engine is the way to go or rebuilt. I am paying a lein holder for this van. I don't have a lot of money to put into it. In fact it went into the shop in May and repairs cost over $1500. I have had nothing but problems with this van so I need to find an inexpensive way if possable to get back on the road. How much would a new engine be verse a rebuilt? I couldn't pull up what I needed so I need a little of your time to find out. Thank you for reading this I hope you can beat the price at kreagen (Long block for $1159 plus $400 to install.) Thank you, Melody

Answer
Melody,

First off, You did not give me very much to work with as I have no idea at to the YEAR, MAKE, MODEL, MILEAGE or past REPAIR HISTORY of this vehicle.

Second, I would get another professional opinion BEFORE I do anything to the vehicle.

Third, New engine verses rebuilt engine really depends upon the quality of work of the engine rebuilder if you choose to go with a rebuilt.

I way the overall condition of the vehicle and if it is cost effective and reasonable to pour in this amount of money vs purchasing another vehicle.

Today you may decide to replace the engine and say 3 months down the road the transmission blows up. Now your looking at another $1500.00 to $2000 to replace the transmission.

No one can make this decision for you as to what you yourself want to do.
