Alfa Romeo Repair: Alfa 156 - Refusing to honour warranty, alfa romeo 156, seal failure

Question
Hi, I have an Alfa Romeo 156, which I purchased new 18 months ago. The car has done 38,000 km and the engine has just blown up. Alfa are claiming there wasn't enough oil in the motor & that the bearings are damaged. They are also claiming that the oil was the wrong type, and as a result are refusing to cover the repairs, and now I'm up for $18,000 for a new motor. The Selina Racing Oil they recommend is not available where I live, and when it was last serviced they used an oil with very similar qualities and specs. It has been 100% maintained and serviced. Now, I'm not questioning that the lack of oil caused the damage, but why I'm upset is because I topped up the oil only 500km before it blew up, so where did the 3 litres of oil go? Alfa clearly does not believe that I put oil in the car despite having the receipt to prove it. Can you tell me why this car would burn so much oil in such a short period of time?

Answer
Years ago, VW/Audi had a valve stem seal problem and their vehicles would burn up a quart per 1000miles.  Jaguars always seemed to have loose rings and considered 1qt/1k miles to be normal.  It would surely have to be a crank seal failure to cause the loss you experienced.  Try an owners club in your country--or start with www.alfaowner.com
