American Motors: amc trans, gasket kit, chassis design

-------------------------I plan on rebuilding the car as a performanace street machine, but will also be drag racing it in bracketts. ( would really like to make it an all out brackett car).
All suggetions an dooing this would be greatly appereciated. Also who due you suggest I contact on Mopar issues?

Can you tell me the differance's between the amc and mopar trans.( 727,904,998 etc.)?
and what I would need to know to to swap one for the other.

An AMC with a 304 would not have a 727 trans, unless it was a special order fleet vehicle; very unlikely. The trans you probably have hooked to your Javelin 304 is the 998. Inside, the AMC & Mopars are the same. The bell housing and bolt pattern are different, though. You can use an overhaul & gasket kit from a Mopar, but a Mopar Torque Flite will NOT bolt up to an AMC engine. The AMC 727 & 998 are interchangable. Of course, the 727 is the choice for engines with any horsepower. Good luck

The answer to your first question would be too long for this message board. I would, however, recommend you visit a local book store. i.e Waldenbooks or Barnes & Noble. Look over the books in their automotive section. There are books from chassis design to engine building to how to build a car for the drags. Read as much as you can. You will also find books about building Mopars. Searching the web is also beneficial. Type in Mopar or AMC in your search engine and you will be surprised to find how much information is available online.
