Audio Systems: wiring up amps and subs, ac voltmeter, impedance ohms

Question
QUESTION: I have a kicker box with 2 12 inch subs loaded.

they are bridged onn the inside or something cause theres only 1 spot to put speaker wires.

i want to hook up 1 amp to each sub

how can i do this?

ANSWER: Since they are already connected internally, one amp to run both is best.

However, if you want to seperate them out, I would need to know the impedance (ohms) and the RMS power handling of each sub to recommend the right amps.

You would have to add another terminal cup (the hook-up) to the enclosure.

QUESTION: alright...well i guess i can just keep them on 1 amp then cause i dont feel like
doing all that extra stuff.

the reason i wanted to run 1 amp to 1 sub is because the subs cut off when i
turn them up real loud and the amp gets super hot. is this because the subs
are to powerful for the amp or the amp is to powerful for the subs?

so there would be no way i could harness 2 amps power to that 1 hook up
spot in the box....like put the negative from 1 amp to the negative hook up
and the posotive from the other amp to the positive hook up?

Answer
Most likely you don't have the right amp. You still need to know the impedance (ohms) at the one terminal to load an amp correctly. Too low of an impedance on an amp will do exactly as you describe.

You will also need to know the RMS combined power handling of the subs. You don't want to exceed the RMS wattage by more than 10%.

You can use an ohm meter to measure the ohm load at the terminal.

Proper gain settings are important as well.

The purpose of the gain is to match the signal volts RMS coming from the source (CD player, etc.) to the input of the amp to prevent clipping (damage by over powering).

You'll need a multi-meter (AC voltmeter), Microsoft Excel and a way to burn an audio CD from an MP3.
