Audio Systems: Aftermarket DVD wiring for 2006 honda pilot, honda pilot, overhead dvd player

Question
Mark,
Just had a Directed overhead DVD player w/ monitor installed in my 2006 Honda Pilot with factory nav system.  I can only play the unit when the ignition is in the ON position. It will not play with the key in the ACC position.  Talked to the installer and was told that the ACC wire only had 10 volts and would not be enough to power the unit, it had to wired to the ON wire to get 12 volts.  As all other accessories (radio, nav system) work in the ACC position, it seems that the DVD player should work in the ACC position as well.  Does this make any sense and do you know of a fix for this low voltage.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Tim

Answer
hmm.  that's weird since usually the key switch is simply provided with 1 source of 12 volts in, and switches that same 12 volts to all other wires (acc, run, start, etc)  but 10 volts definitely wouldn't run the stereo very well by itself (note on this later).  mine wont work under 11 in fact.  I noticed this when my battery was dying I put a meter on it (with the car not running) as soon as the meter dipped below 11 the sound got a scratchy like the cd was dirty and then it kicked off.
the 10 volts wouldn't hurt the dvd player any so if you know how to wire it to the ACC you can certainly try it and see for yourself. when I said "note on this later" - some cd or dvd players don't even use the red wire for main power, they only use it to sense to turn on and if yours is like this you could probably put 9 volts on it and as long as the yellow wire on your cd/dvd player has 12 volts to the battery the cd/dvd will work exactly the same!
But if you have one of the units that needs full power on its red wire and only uses the yellow to retain memory but not for main power, then 10 volts wont work.  BUT yes, there is a way to fix the 10 volt problem if it's actually the case. again, cant imagine why it would have a different voltage than the other wires. but if you are familiar with what a relay does you can use it to help you.  a relay has 4 contacts on it.  2 use a low power signal on a coil which connects the other 2 wires which can carry a higher amount of power.  so you could put the relay coil between ground and ACC.  this way the coil would energize with the 10 volts from ACC and connect the other 2 wires.  the other 2 wires would go between the red wire of the cd player and a line directly from the car battery providing the 12 volts.
does that make sense?  If not I can try to explain better. but if I were you I'd try the acc thing first instead of just assuming 10 volts wont work.
Good luck!
